Rethinking PR Priorities in an AI-Driven Landscape

I recently had a conversation with a business partner about how our PR offering should evolve, and one point kept resurfacing: the discipline is quietly undergoing one of its most significant shifts in decades. Media relations, once the unquestioned centrepiece of PR, has officially slipped from the number one investment priority among leading consultancies. That change alone says a great deal about where the industry is heading.

For years, media relations was the engine that powered PR. Secure the right coverage, land the headline, hit the KPI. Simple in theory, harder in practice. But the rules are changing, and so too is the definition of what “visibility” actually means.

From Headlines to Algorithms

The rise of artificial intelligence has reshaped the landscape. Agency leaders are now investing heavily in GenAI tools, not just to create content but to scale operations and analyse performance in ways that were previously unimaginable. Alongside this, Generative Engine Optimisation is emerging as a serious priority. GEO is not simply an extension of SEO; it reflects a shift in how people discover information. Increasingly, answers are being generated by AI systems, and brands that are cited as authoritative sources within those responses gain a distinct advantage.

This creates a new kind of competition. It is no longer just about ranking on search engines, but about becoming part of the dataset that informs AI-generated answers. In that sense, visibility is no longer confined to articles or search results, but embedded within the systems that shape how information is delivered.

Media Relations Still Matters, But Differently

None of this means media relations has lost its value. Far from it. Strategic coverage in the right publications, reaching the right audience, remains a powerful tool for building credibility and influence. What has changed is the tolerance for vanity coverage. Securing mentions for the sake of volume, without clear alignment to business objectives, feels increasingly outdated.

The emphasis now is on precision. Coverage needs to serve a purpose, whether that is supporting search visibility, reinforcing thought leadership, or contributing to a broader narrative that positions a brand effectively within its industry. Media relations is no longer just about being seen; it is about being seen in the right way, in the right places, and for the right reasons.

Beyond Coverage: A Broader View of Visibility

This is where SEO, GEO, and influencer relations come into sharper focus. Together, they expand the concept of PR beyond traditional press outreach. Influencers bring access to engaged communities, SEO ensures discoverability in search environments, and GEO positions brands within AI-driven ecosystems. When combined with strong media relations, they create a more holistic approach to visibility.

The real opportunity lies in how these elements work together. A well-placed article can support search rankings, inform AI models, and provide content that can be amplified through influencer channels. PR, in this context, becomes less about isolated outputs and more about interconnected visibility.

A Discipline Evolving, Not Disappearing

That conversation with my business partner ended on a reassuring note. Media relations is not disappearing; it is evolving. It remains a core pillar of PR, but it now sits within a broader, more complex ecosystem shaped by technology and changing audience behaviours.

The challenge for agencies is not to abandon what has worked, but to build on it. Relationships, storytelling, and credibility still sit at the heart of effective PR. What has changed is how those strengths are applied in a world where algorithms, AI systems, and digital channels play an increasingly central role.

PR is no longer just about securing coverage. It is about ensuring that coverage, and everything around it, works harder than ever before.
